Cryosurgery for Morton’s Neuroma
Do you feel like you are constantly walking on a marble or a pebble? If you are suffering from the sharp, burning pain of Morton’s Neuroma, you may fear that “cutting it out” is your only option.
At Alexander & Farrell Podiatry, we specialise in Ultrasound-Guided Cryosurgery, a highly effective, non-invasive alternative to traditional neuroma surgery.

What is Morton’s Neuroma?
Morton’s Neuroma is a painful thickening of the nerve tissue, usually found between your third and fourth toes. It can make wearing shoes unbearable and walking painful. Traditionally, doctors treat this by surgically cutting the nerve out (neurectomy). However, studies show that up to 40% of patients are dissatisfied with the results of open surgery, often due to permanent numbness or the formation of a “stump neuroma” (painful nerve regrowth).
Why Choose Cryosurgery for Morton’s Neuroma?
Cryosurgery offers a smarter way to treat the nerve without the trauma of open surgery.
Instead of removing the nerve, we use extreme cold to “freeze” the nerve sheath. This stops the transmission of pain signals and shrinks the thickened tissue, allowing you to walk comfortably again.
The Advantages Over Traditional Surgery:
- High Success Rate: Our clinical audits show an approximate 85% success rate for primary neuromas.
- No “Stump” Risk: Because we do not cut the nerve, there is zero risk of developing a stump neuroma—a complication often more painful than the original condition.
- Minimal Downtime: Most patients return to work the next day.
- Preserved Sensation: Unlike surgery, which often leaves permanent numbness, cryosurgery aims to preserve the nerve’s structure.
How The Procedure Works
The treatment is performed in our rooms and takes about 40–60 minutes.
- Pinpoint Accuracy: We use high-definition Ultrasound to locate the exact position of the neuroma.
- The “Freeze”: After numbing the foot, we insert a tiny cryoprobe (no larger than a needle) next to the nerve.
- Treatment: The probe cools to -55°C, freezing the neuroma in a series of short cycles. This breaks down the thickened wall of the nerve that is causing your pain.
Done: The probe is removed, a small plaster is applied, and you can go home immediately.

Recovery: Back on Your Feet Faster
One of the biggest benefits of Cryosurgery for Morton’s Neuroma is the easy recovery compared to traditional excision.
- Day 1: You must rest and keep weight off the foot for the first 24 hours.
- Day 2: Most patients can return to work (if it doesn’t involve heavy standing).
- Day 14: You can typically resume light exercise and sporting activities.
